Boats Against the Flood: NACHA’s Voluntary Rescue Response in Bardera

During the 2024 Gu floods, when the Juba River overflowed at Bardera (Baardheere) in Gedo Region and cut off roads, Nature Care Horn of Africa (NACHA) took part in a voluntary emergency response to rescue and transport flood-affected people. Using motorized boats and life jackets, NACHA volunteers carried women, men and children, some with their household belongings, from flooded streets and riverbanks to safer, accessible ground.

The response was carried out without donor funding and addressed the most urgent need of the moment: safe movement through floodwater. The report draws lessons on safer boat loading, priority for children, mothers with infants and other vulnerable people, and better record-keeping, and recommends stronger local flood preparedness.
